The core curriculum aims at a comprehensive Pre-Medical course, which basically helps undergraduates to make an informed decision in context to pursuing medicine and facilitates a supportive premedical base. The Premedical Science course of the MD program is delivered at the American University of Barbados. The course also comprises basic undergraduate classes in reading, writing and mathematics which are required for a better understanding of the science foundation courses.

The Premedical Sciences curriculum is designed as a firm foundation for the advanced studies offered later in the Medical Sciences years. The Admission Committee places the applicants into the Sciences year according to the candidate’s academic background. Premedical Science semesters 1, 2 and 3 cover the courses in Biology, Chemistry, Math and Physics, respectively.

Premedical program courses are designed to strengthen the student's Premedical Science foundation to enhance the opportunity for success in advanced medical studies. The Supplemental Instruction Model of peer learning, as well as peer review groups and mentoring, are offered for Science courses taught within the Premedical Sciences years. Throughout all semesters of the Premedical Sciences, there is a strong focus on skills development and academic enhancement.

Students who complete the Premedical Sciences years with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or more and pass the Premedical Science Comprehensive Examination (PMSCE) are promoted to the first year Medical Sciences of the Doctor of Medicine program.
